Timberbush vs the Competition: An Honest Review of Scotland's Tour Operators

Blog 17 Sep 2026

Choosing a company for your Scotland tour can be surprisingly difficult.

Search for the best Scotland tours, and you'll quickly find yourself comparing similar itineraries, similar prices and plenty of five-star reviews. Rabbie's, Highland Explorer Tours, and Timberbush Tours are some of the biggest companies in the space, and all offer ways to explore the Highlands, Loch Ness, the Isle of Skye and Scotland's most famous landmarks.

So, how do you decide?

The honest answer is that there isn't one tour company that is best for everyone.

The right choice depends on what matters most to you: group size, itinerary, price, accommodation, departure location, flexibility, the style of your guide and how much time you want to spend exploring.

Rather than simply listing all of the reasons you should book with us, we feel it would be more helpful for us to outline the differences between us and some of our competitors.

The Scottish tour market at a glance

There are many operators that position themselves in a similar niche to Timberbush: guided sightseeing tours designed to make Scotland accessible to visitors who don't want to drive themselves.

That means there is naturally a lot of overlap.

You'll find many tours visiting Scotland’s most popular destinations such as Glencoe, Loch Ness, the Isle of Skye, and the Highlands. You'll also find knowledgeable driver-guides, modern vehicles and plenty of positive customer reviews.

In fact, travellers discussing these companies online often come to much the same conclusion: they're all established operators with good reputations, and the differences can sometimes be quite subtle.

The important thing is therefore not simply asking:

"Which company is the best?"

Instead, ask:

"Which company is best for the way I want to experience Scotland?"

Timberbush Tours

Good for: Travellers looking for knowledgeable local guides, excellent itineraries and great value for money

Timberbush is a family business that has been offering tours of Scotland for decades, with a strong focus on giving visitors the chance to experience the country through knowledgeable local driver-guides.

Our tours range from one-day excursions to multi-day adventures, departing from Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness (and soon Portree).

One of our biggest strengths is the variety of ways you can experience Scotland.

Want to see the Highlands in a day?

There's a Timberbush tour for that.

Want several days exploring Skye?

There are multi-day options.

Interested in whisky, castles, history or Scotland's landscapes?

There are itineraries built around those interests too.

And if a scheduled tour isn't right for you, Timberbush also offers private tours, transfers, and bespoke golf tours, allowing trips to be built around your own interests and timetable.

Where Timberbush stands out

Our guides

Ask our customers what made their trip memorable, and you'll frequently hear about the driver-guide. We take pride in our team, believing that we have the best driver-guides in the business – they offer more than just commentary and chauffeuring; they’re comedians, DJs, nature experts, and historians all rolled into one.

Our guides don't simply transport passengers between attractions. They're responsible for bringing Scotland to life through history, stories, local knowledge and recommendations.

This is also reflected in independent review data. We have accumulated over 50,000 reviews across Trustpilot, TripAdvisor, Google, and countless online travel agents, averaging 4.9 stars with 95% of reviews being 5 stars. Most reviews repeatedly highlight knowledgeable, entertaining and personable guides.

Our choice of itineraries

We don't believe there is one "perfect" way to see Scotland.

Some travellers want to tick off the country's biggest sights, visiting Glencoe, Loch Ness, and the Highlands in a single day. Others would rather spend longer in fewer places – taking a leisurely journey through St Andrews and the Fishing villages of Fife.

That's why our tours cover everything from classic one-day trips to longer multi-day tours of Scotland that explore Skye, the Highlands and beyond.

Our departure locations

For visitors staying in Scotland's main cities, convenience matters.

Timberbush operates from Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness, and Portree, giving travellers more flexibility when planning their wider Scottish itinerary.

Our vehicles

Our modern fleet provides a comfortable way to cover some serious mileage.

And that's worth mentioning because Scotland is a bigger country than most people expect.

A tour to Skye, the North Coast or the Highlands can involve several hundred miles and a full day of driving. A comfortable vehicle, good visibility and someone with a local knowledge of the roads can make a significant difference.

What Timberbush does differently

Group sizes vary by tour

This is an important point.

While Timberbush also offer small-group tours, including 10- and 16-person departures, some of our tours also run on our luxury 53-seater coaches. We do this for a few good reasons, such as reducing our environmental footprint and easing congestion, lowering our ticket costs, and increasing our operational capacity. While some travellers prefer this due to the social aspect and better price point, if having exactly 16 passengers or fewer is your priority, check the individual tour page before booking.

Not everything is included

Like most sightseeing operators, attraction admissions, food and drink and some other activities are generally additional costs. This makes our tours more friendly for customers on a budget and for those that are interested in more flexibility with their attractions, accommodation, and food choices.

This isn't a disadvantage - it gives you choice - but you should always read the "included" section before booking so you know exactly what you're paying for.

How do our competitors differ?

Rabbies – Good for: Travellers who prioritise small groups or alternative booking locations

Rabbie's is probably the competitor you're most likely to encounter when comparing Scottish small-group tours.

Their biggest selling point is simple:

small groups.

Rabbie's states that its escorted Scotland tours are limited to a maximum of 16 passengers, travelling in 16-seat mini-coaches. This means you’re guaranteed to be on a smaller coach.

Rabbies also boasts more departure cities than any other operator, offering tours from Aberdeen and Aviemore – meaning you have great flexibility when deciding where to travel from.

Highland Explorer Tours – Good for: All-inclusive packages on multi-day tours

Highland Explorer Tours is another established option for visitors exploring Scotland. Their focus is on extended tours, offering the largest range of multi-day tours.

One interesting difference is that Highland Explorer includes accommodation on all multi-day tours. This is a great option for travellers who aren’t fussy about where they want to stay and are happy to have the whole process handled for them.

Highland Experience Tours – Good for: Extensive range of multi-day tours

Highland Experience Tours operates similarly to Highland Explorers and Rabbies, delivering an offering focused on all-inclusive multi-day tours with some options for small-group tours.

While they do offer tours in varying coach sizes, a big differentiator is their upsell option to pay a slightly higher ticket price to guarantee being on a small-group coach.

What we love about Timberbush.

If you want to compare a tour based primarily on the quality of the itinerary and guiding experience rather than simply the number of inclusions, Timberbush is worth considering.

Our approach is to give travellers flexibility over as many elements as possible, such as accommodation and attractions, rather than assuming every traveller wants the same package. While we do offer a booking service, our standard tour packages allow guests the option to book accommodation or attractions on their own, giving them more flexibility and customisation over their tour and the location and quality of their accommodation.

Again, however, this comes down to personal preference.

Some travellers want everything arranged.

Others prefer to choose for themselves.

So, which Scotland tour company should you choose?

Here's our honest answer.

Choose Timberbush if...

You want a Scottish-owned operator with decades of experience, knowledgeable local guides and a broad choice of day and multi-day itineraries.

You value the experience of the guide as much as simply getting from A to B.

You want the option of small-group tours but don't mind the possibility of being on a larger coach.

Or you're interested in taking your trip beyond a standard scheduled tour through a private or bespoke experience.

Choose Rabbie's if...

Your biggest priority is a consistently small group.

You want a 16-seat mini-coach experience and a very extensive choice of itineraries.

Choose Highland Explorer if...

You want the choice between small and standard group sizes.

You're particularly interested in multi-day touring where accommodation is incorporated into the package.

Or you've found a specific itinerary that fits your plans better than the alternatives.

And choose another operator if...

Their itinerary is simply better suited to you.

That's something we're comfortable saying.

There are plenty of excellent tour companies operating in Scotland. Some specialise in very small groups. Some focus on particular destinations. Some offer budget-friendly experiences, while others concentrate on luxury or private travel.

The "best" company is the one that gives you the experience you actually want.

What actually matters to you?

It's tempting to compare Scotland tours based on vehicle size, price or the number of destinations included.

But those things only tell part of the story.

A Scotland tour is ultimately about how you experience the country.

The scenery outside the window.

The story your guide tells as you pass a castle.

The unexpected viewpoint or hidden gem.

The recommendation for where to eat that evening.

The piece of Scottish history you didn't know before your trip.

The feeling that you're not simply being transported around a list of attractions but actually being introduced to Scotland.

That's what we believe makes a great tour.

And it's why, despite having plenty of competition, we're proud to continue doing what Timberbush has been doing for decades: helping visitors discover Scotland with knowledgeable local guides, carefully planned itineraries and a genuine passion for the country.
