Your 4 day tour takes in the best that North England has to offer. Experience the breathtaking scenery of the lake district, the historical centre of the north of England, York, and enjoy trips to the towns of Whitby and Durham.
On the first day of our 4 day tour we travel from Edinburgh, heading south to our first stop of the day at Jedburgh in the borders of Scotland. We spend a short while in the small border town, enough time for refreshments, a morning coffee, and to get some photos of the famous Jedburgh Abbey and the Mary Queen of Scots' House.
From Jedburgh, we leave Scotland travelling further South to Hadrian’s Wall. The Roman wall was a defensive fortification in the Roman province of Britannia, dating back to AD 122 in the reign of emperor Hadrian. For three centuries, Hadrian’s Wall spanned almost 80 miles coast-to-coast and was built by over 15,000 men. We spend time here exploring the wall, with the option of visiting the Vindolanda Roman Army Museum*, have a bite to eat and enjoy breathtaking views across the ancient ruin.
We then journey through the North Pennines, an Area of Natural Beauty, to the small village of Alston, for a refreshment break, before we continue to Bowness-on-Windermere, in the Lake District, where we check into our accommodation.
After breakfast, we have free time to explore the beautiful town of Windermere. You will have the opportunity to visit The World of Beatrix Potter*; an enchanting attraction that allows visitors to experience the world of one of England’s most famous writers.
At midday, our York and the Lake District Experience tour will continue through the Yorkshire Dales National Park, travelling by the spa town of Harrogate. Our options today will be a lovely stop at either Bolton Abbey* or Bolton Castle*. We will then arrive in the medieval town of York, where we check in to our accommodation.
This is our most flexible touring day. You have the day to explore the medieval town of York at your own pace; you may choose to visit York’s magnificent Cathedral - York Minster*; the winding market streets of the Shambles; The Jorvik Viking Centre* to glimpse life in the city conquered by the Vikings; or even wander the town walls and take in the scenery. The entire day is at your leisure.
The final day of our 4 day tour begins with a stop in the fishing town of Whitby and optional stop at Robin Hood’s Bay. Located in the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, the bay was a well-known smuggling hotspot in the 18th Century. Spend time here exploring the beach, well known for its substantial number of fossils, enjoy refreshments on the seaside and breathe in the sea air.
We leave Whitby just after lunchtime, travelling north through the Yorkshire Moors to the city of Durham. Local legend states the ancient city was founded in AD 995 through ‘divine intervention’. Here, we have plenty of time to explore the city, its castle* and its cathedral* and learn all about its legendary past.
From Durham, we begin our journey back to Edinburgh. We stop briefly in Berwick Upon Tweed, on the North-East coast of England, for refreshments, before we return to Scotland and Edinburgh, where our York and The Lake District Experience tour ends.
